With growing talk of expanding the Abraham Accords, Israel and the U.S. are eager to bring Saudi Arabia into the fold. Indeed, it is expected that the current discussion between Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump will look at reviving the normalization efforts.
But history, even most recent history, demands we proceed with caution.
A new video by JEM’s Enduring Peace, provides crucial guidance from the Rebbe on relying on monarchies in the Persian Gulf. “The Rebbe consistently urged Israel’s leadership to place Israel’s security as the cornerstone of any political or diplomatic agreement,” explained Rabbi Elkanah Shmotkin, director of Enduring Peace and presenter of the video.
“Why do powerful regimes collapse in the blink of an eye? What critical lessons from history must Israel heed before making peace? What weakness is inherent in autocracies and how should that inform negotiations?” These are some of the questions addressed by the Rebbe.
Offering four key lessons Israel must consider before moving forward, the film draws upon a talk of the Rebbe pointing to past upheavals—from the Russian Czars to the Shah of Iran. The Rebbe’s guidance can serve as a touchstone to Israel’s leadership as it navigates these important relationships.
